Sixteen nurses are 2021 Pennie Peralta Academic Scholars, receive $120,000 in scholarships

Sixteen nurses are the 2021 Pennie Peralta Academic Scholars and will share $120,000 in scholarships thanks to generous funding from the Medical Society of South Carolina (MSSC).

The Nursing Scholars Program advances excellence in nursing practice and enhances the ability of nursing leaders to fill critical work force needs by providing financial assistance to nurses working full-time within Roper St. Francis Healthcare. Since established in 2011, the program has provided financial support to assist 87 nurses in achieving advanced practice nursing degrees and eight in completing nursing research internships. Through the Roper St. Francis Foundation, MSSC designated its 2021 Nursing Scholars Program grant in honor of former Chief Nursing Officer Pennie Peralta.

“We are so grateful to the Medical Society of South Carolina and its physician members for recognizing Pennie Peralta by naming the 2021 academic scholars in honor of her 43 years of nursing at Roper St. Francis,” said Rissa Jamarik, vice president and chief nursing officer.  “Pennie leaves a legacy of service and leadership that will inspire this year’s recipients as well as those to come for many years.”

Each year, the MSSC Roper St. Francis Physicians Endowment Nursing Scholars Program funds scholarships and research awards through a competitive application and selection process led this year by Roper Hospital Chief Nursing Administrator Sue Bennett, RN, MA, NEA-BC, and administered by Melody Weidman in the Department of Professional Development. Award funds are administered by the Office of Grants.
