Please dispose of infectious waste appropriately

The safety department discovered inappropriate waste disposal of a medication vial and IV tubing containing blood in regular trash at Roper Hospital on Thursday.

We were not able to identify the department in which the waste was generated. The items were found around the trash compactor on the ground.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control requires that this waste be handled in a manner so the general public, the environment and waste handlers are not at risk of exposure from infectious waste. RSFH is committed to following all state requirements pertaining to waste management.

Leaders should be discussing waste management with you soon. You also can reference this Waste Management Quick Reference Guide, which should be posted in all medication rooms and soiled utility rooms where waste is generated and collected.

Please reach out to Sue Scheeler or Jimmy Wilkerson with any waste management questions.
